Female Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)

By Cheryl Iglesia, MD

Dont make me laugh, or Ill wet my pants! How many times have you said that? Or have you thought twice before getting on the backyard trampoline and rushed to the bathroom to empty your bladder before jumping on? Or perhaps the worse thing about having a cold, flu or cough symptoms is not the stuffy head or nose, but the need to wear pads to control leakage with coughing or sneezing.

If any of these scenarios describe you, then you are one of the 1 in 3 American women over age 45 who suffers from stress urinary incontinence. You may be under age 45, and the most common reason for having this condition are changes that have occurred to the muscles and support structures of the pelvic floor after pregnancy and childbirth.

But you dont have to suffer in silence and you are not doomed to wearing pads your entire life for this problem. Effective treatments such as the suburethral sling, which is an outpatient procedure, can cure or significantly improve stress incontinence by 86 percent. Kegels, bladder repositioning procedures and urethral injections are also effective.

Contact NAFC for a healthcare provider near you and go ahead and jump and laugh and enjoy!
